From the exhibition ‘Mischief & Mayhem’ at the Old Royal Naval College.
A study adapted after James Thornhill
John Worley was a Greenwich Naval Pensioner and painted as Old Winter by James Thornhill, circa 1715. He was known as being one of the most mischievous pensioners in Greenwich regularly being punished for being drunk and cursing. It is thought that he was drawn and painted by James Thornhil as a punishment and to keep him still!
This sketch was made for a new illustrated guide to the Painted Hall
